Born in Athens, Vermont, on September 22, 1834, Hudson studied surveying in Townshend, Vermont. Nathaniel Carlos Hudson, Hudson's brother, became a lawyer in New York City after running away from home when he was fourteen. In 1862, Hudson enlisted in Company E of the 6th Iowa Cavalry. This regiment was officially organized at Camp Hendershott near Davenport, Iowa in early 1863. It moved to Sioux City, Dakota in March 1863.
